A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
